“Rocks Under Water” is a new “series within a series” for me. I have always wanted to learn how to paint rocks under water, how the light twinkles on the surface, yet one can sense the depth of the water and the beauty of the rocks beneath the surface. I have closely observed how other artists depict this tricky subject matter. I have spent hours just watching the lake as it ripples over the sometimes huge boulders, how the depth of the water changes the color and character of the lake and how the light can change so quickly. I have tried to paint this en plein air, but unless it is an extremely calm day, I’m better off taking a photo of the image, making some quick sketches with color notes and completing the painting in my studio. I start with an acrylic under painting, done with my non dominant hand (left handed) and then articulate the image in layers and layers of oil and/or alkyd paint. I hope that you, the viewer, would be able to sense the rhythm of the water over the rocks in these images. Check back here over the next year, as I will be adding to this collection of images.
