I painted (and will continue to paint) this series in memory of my brother-in-law who died from bone cancer in 1992. (His name is pronounced, “Ya’-nis,” which is Latvian for “John.”) I didn’t know what I was going to do, as I was committed to a 2-week painting workshop in Grand Marais shortly after his death. His family insisted that Janis would want me to go to the workshop. At the last minute, I grabbed some canvases that I had in my studio (14” x 18”) my new paints (Alkyd) and some of the flower photographs that Janis had given me. In the photos, the flowers were bathed in a beautiful light, with the background being dark and ominous. This contrast became an obvious, and very healing metaphor: the darkness represented death, but the light represented the hope we have in the resurrection with Christ. As I painted the flowers, it was as if Janis and I were working on the flowers together. This series has grown and evolved, as you will see by the images.
Please note: In addition to individual note cards, I have boxed sets of 6 available.
